Ahead of the government's spring Budget this week, both 'sides' campaigning for changes in alcohol duty have been seeing some coverage of their calls. The Alcohol Health Alliance and other health groups have been calling for a raise in duties relating to cheap white cider, which were implicated in the recent death of a 16 year old girl - The Mirror.

The NHS chief executive Simon Stevens said binge-drinkers are "selfish to get so blotto" they end up in an ambulance or A&E. “More than a third of A&E attendances at peak times are caused by drunkenness - casualty nurses and doctors are understandably frustrated about the NHS being used as a national hangover service,” he added. Public Health England (PHE) warned that eight in every 10 people aged 40 to 60 in England are overweight, drink too much or get too little exercise, reported the BBC. The PHE website and app has a quiz that gives users a health score based on their lifestyle habits by asking lifestyle questions that include drinking habits.
The Telegraph, reported on new [draft] NICE guidelines on alcohol physical problems which suggest women who drink two glasses of wine a night should be sent for scans by their GPs to check for cirrhosis. It reported critics said it was a “colossal waste of NHS resources”, but others have defended the advice.

Taxes on alcohol have been branded “a mess” by the Institute for Fiscal Studies, which claimed they were responsible for a shrinking share of tax receipts, saying there was “a clear case for reform” of duties on driving and alcohol as they were poorly targeted at problem drinking. Financial Times

Nearly a third (31%) of drivers that drink admit to driving when over the legal alcohol limit - equivalent to 10 million UK adults - according to a recent survey. The survey was commissioned by insurance company RIAS, who warn many people are still prepared to risk drink driving despite a huge decline in drink driving.
RIAS warns that those in their 30s appear to be 'particularly irresponsible when it comes to drinking and driving', with over two fifths (44%) admitting to driving when knowingly over the limit. The survey also claims that one fifth (20%) of drivers in their 30s that drink believe they would be 'safe' to drive after six or seven glasses of beer or wine.
