Events & dates 2019/20: FASD conference, Drinking Studies Network, GAPA 2020, Men & Alcohol series

Forthcoming events in 2019/20:

An event on Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) takes place on 12 December 2019 in Manchester, hosted by the University of Salford. The conference will provide delegates with an introduction and understanding of the issues and complexities in the topic of FASD. Delegates will hear from internationally renowned speakers on a range of issues relating to FASD including its history, diagnosis, comorbidity, issues around social care, national healthcare guidelines, behaviour management of children with FASD and more. Also on the 12 December, a Drinking Studies Network (DSN) workshop in Leicester will explore 'Excess, moderation and sobriety'. The DSN is an interdisciplinary and international research group that connects scholars working on drink and drinking culture across different societies and time periods. NHS Substance Misuse Providers Alliance on alcohol treatment

On 9 September the NHS Substance Misuse Providers Alliance (SMPA) conference takes place in Sheffield on the topic of 'Alcohol Treatment: reduced demand or more hidden harm?'. Including a range of speakers and workshops, the event aims to cover both the perspective of the population and individuals, asking how do we address low alcohol treatment uptake and how do we reverse and ensure we have the capacity to meet this need? Alcohol services in London: CLAHRC public event

An event to improve care for people with alcohol problems in south London will be held on 2 May for members of the public with experience of alcohol problems help. The event involves a morning of presentations with researchers and clinicians based in south London who are investigating how to improve alcohol services and treatment. Events & dates 2019: Alcohol Change UK national conference, BSA careers, SHAAP 'Occasionals', MCA, SUAB & more

Alcohol Change UK has announced a 2019 national conference to take place on 19th June in London, exploring 'New insights into alcohol research, policy and practice'.

The event will be the organisation's first following the merger of the former charities Alcohol Concern and Alcohol Research UK and will look at the evidence on alcohol use and harms across the UK and the policies that have the potential to drive change. It will discuss the latest innovations in the treatment sector, Scotland's minimum unit pricing (MUP) and consider how cultural norms can be shifted. Alcohol Charter calls for evidence based national strategy

An Alcohol Charter has been released by a cross-party parliamentary group and thirty organisations calling for the forthcoming national alcohol strategy to reflect the PHE evidence review for reducing alcohol harm.

The Charter includes a call to increase alcohol duties by 1% above RPI in order to provide £100 million ring-fenced for alcohol treatment services which are currently "in crisis" according to a recent report. It also makes key calls to improve support for those in need, measures to protect public health and actions to address alcohol-related crime and disorder, attracting some media attention.

[update] Putting communities in charge of alcohol: a health champion model

On the 6 November in Manchester, an event will explore a current project developing community capacity through Alcohol Health Champions (AHC's) across Greater Manchester. The project is led by the University of Salford and others with support from the Econonomic & Social Research Council (ESRC). Drawing on the lay expertise of the audience, it will explore the barriers and facilitators to implementing an asset based community development (ABCD) approach to improving health outcomes. [update] 'Dying for a drink': SHAAP report launch

On Friday 26 October in Edinburgh, an event organised by Scottish Health Action on Alcohol Problems (SHAAP) will launch its report: 'Dying for a drink' on alcohol mortality in Scotland. There were 1,235 alcohol-related deaths in Scotland in 2017, and 3,705 alcohol-attributable deaths in 2015. The report was compiled over several months by an expert group and delivered to the Scottish Government in September 2018; it will lead work to enhance understanding of alcohol-related deaths in Scotland. Alcohol Concern2018: 'On the Move'

Alcohol Concern Cymru's 2018 conference on the theme of alcohol and travel takes place in Newport, Wales on the 19th September. The conference looks at developments 50 years since the introduction of the breathalyser but recent rises in alcohol-related incidents on planes and aims to consider how policymakers can strike the right balance between promoting public safety and ensuring our continued freedom to enjoy alcohol in public spaces. Drugs, Alcohol, Women and Families Conference (DAWF)

On 23 & 24 May 2018, a Drugs, Alcohol, Women and Families Conference (DAWF) takes place at the  Manchester Metropolitan University. Sponsored by The Society for the Study of Addiction (SSA), the event will focus on women, families and young people affected by substance use and with a conference theme of 'putting research into practice'. Confirmed panel themes include: pregnancy, women and agency, trauma and domestic abuse, young people, and international policy.

On 12 December 2017 an event 'Tackling alcohol and addictions through applied health research' is hosted  by King's College London and NIHR CLAHRC South London. The half-day conference will showcase current work iand provide a platform for PhD students to discuss the challenges of completing a PhD and  present their projects.
