Not far off from 2019 now, with many people no doubt intending to kick the new year off with resolutions or a Dry January. Now led by the recently formed Alcohol Change UK, the charity says an estimated 1 in 10 drinkers - 4.2 million people in the UK – are already planning to do Dry January in 2019 'to feel healthier, save money and improve their relationship with alcohol long term.'
Participants can sign up via the dryjanuary.org.uk for regular support emails with tips and tricks or download the free app. A new book Try Dry: The Official Guide to a Month Off Booze, has also been released, published by Square Peg, with a foreword by comedian and actor Lee Mack.
Alcohol Problems, Policy & Practice
'Alcohol Problems, Policy & Practice' returns as a week-long Masters level course organised by the Addictions Department at KCL and the UK Centre for Tobacco and Alcohol Studies, taking place from 4-8 February 2019 in Denmark Hill South London. Bringing together leading experts from across the UK - including Prof Sir Ian Gilmore, Prof Colin Drummond, Prof Gerard Hastings, Dr Niamh Fitzgerald, Dr Jane Marshall, Dr Sally Marlow and many more - the course will cover current issues in alcohol use and policy, alcohol harms and treatment, the role of the alcohol industry, and influences of comorbidity and social inequalities.

SHAAP pathways to recovery & alcohol occasionals
On 15 January Scottish Health Action on Alcohol Problems (SHAAP), is hosting a Pathways to Recovery event, half-day workshop is part of a series focussing specifically on Alcohol and Recovery. SHAAP's alcohol occasionals continue into 2019 also on the theme of recovery, with an Evaluation of the Drink Wise Age Well Interventions on 17 January 2019 and "Before rock bottom?" Promoting early recovery and self-change amongst harmful drinkers on 14 February - further details and upcoming occasionals here.
Homelessness, Substance Use & Addiction
OIn 18 January 2019, the Centre for Addictive Behaviours Research, based at London South Bank University is hosting an event on Homelessness, Substance Use & Addiction in partnership with the London Drug & Alcohol Policy Forum. In the context of rising homelessness, the day aims to highlight current research, and to create discussion around how, moving forward, research could shape policy for the benefit of those living on the streets. British Sociological Association (BSA) research careers event
A save the date announcement of 24 May 2019 has been made by the BSA Alcohol Study Group for an event on carreers in the study of alcohol sociology, to take place in London. Confirmed speakers include Dr Betsy Thom, Dr Thomas Thurnell-Read, Dr James Kneale and more.
Finally, on 16 January, an exhibition of a photovoice project on recovery and identity takes place in Edinburgh at 6pm. The exhibition, which showcases photos taken to represent people's recovery, also runs during day time hours from 14-18 January - see here for details.
