Alcohol Concern2018: 'On the Move'
Alcohol Concern Cymru's 2018 conference on the theme of alcohol and travel takes place in Newport, Wales on the 19th September. The conference looks at developments 50 years since the introduction of the breathalyser but recent rises in alcohol-related incidents on planes and aims to consider how policymakers can strike the right balance between promoting public safety and ensuring our continued freedom to enjoy alcohol in public spaces. Alcoholism, Stigma, and Disability Symposium
On September 13-14, the University of Bristol is hosting an event for policy makers and researchers interested in 'understanding more about population health, government regulation, and cultural perceptions of alcoholism'. The event page states 'by exploring the intersection of alcoholism, stigma, and disability, this interdisciplinary symposium will contribute to understandings of the past and speak to present concerns over population health, regulation, and cultural perceptions. British Academy: 'Alcohol & Humans: A Long and Social Affair'
On September 13-14, the British Academy is holding an event that aims to explore the importance of alcohol 'in the social fabric of many human societies both past and present' in London. The conference will 'examine the use of alcohol in the human lineage and our closest primate relatives, as well as its wider relationship to social contexts such as feasting, sacred rituals, and bonding'. UKCTAS
The 5th Alcohol Policy in Practice CPD intensive training course from the UK Centre for Tobacco and Alcohol Studies takes place from 11 - 13 September 2018 in Bath. Taught by leading academics from the Universities of Sheffield, Bath, Stirling and others, as well as international experts from the Institute of Alcohol Studies and the E-HESP School of Public Health in France, the course will be run for the first time in beautiful Bath.
Previous participants have included policymakers, professionals and researchers from Canada, Iceland, Thailand, New Zealand and other European countries, as well as around the UK. Further details here or follow @ukctas.
European Alcohol Policy Conference
The 8th European Alcohol Policy Conference (8EAPC), ‘Enlightened Alcohol Policy for the 21st Century’, is to be held in Edinburgh on 20 and 21 November. SHAAP (Scottish Health Action on Alcohol Problems) and Eurocare (The European Alcohol Policy Alliance) are the organisers of the conference, which 'draws on the city’s tradition for evidence-based forward-thinking rooted in the age of Enlightenment, and is aimed at stimulating debate and policies linked to a variety of modern alcohol-linked problems'.
It is anticipating around 300 delegates, and presentations will be made by Government ministers and officials, representatives from the World Health Organization, the European Commission and leading NGOs, as well as top academics and authors. See here for further details.
Medical Council on Alcohol (MCA) 'Risky Drinking' Symposium
On 14 November 2018, the Medical Council on Alcohol is holding a symposium on 'Risky Drinking' in London. The programme will include Professor Roger Williams on the Lancet Commission on the Liver, Clive Henn from PHE on public health and the PHE’s CQUIN programme , Professor Ketan Patel on the recent elucidation of the molecular basis of alcohol in cancer causation, Dr John Holmes on risk, guideline development and implementation and Professor Colin Drummond on alcohol treatment services. The 2018 Max Glatt memorial lecture will be given by Dr Jane Marshall, consultant psychiatrist at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. Alcohol and Public Health: Framing and communicating risk
On 20 Novermber Middlsex University's Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (DARC) is holding a conferenceaiming to explore how complex research findings on risk factors are ‘translated’ into public communication and related issues. The Society for the Study of Addictions (SSA) annual conference takes place from the 8-9 September 2018 in Newcastle including a keynote on How the use of new technologies changes the treatment of alcohol use disorders (AUD). See here for more information and booking. The SSA is also seeking nominations for a new SSA-supported project on Women and Addiction.
The 2018 International Network of Brief Interventions for Alcohol and other Drugs (INEBRIA) conference will take place in Santiago de Chile
The European Society for Social Drug Research conference takes place 4-6 October 2018 in Budapest, Hungary. The ESSD was founded in 1990 to promote social science approaches to drugs research, with special reference to the situation in Europe. See here for more details and call for papers.
The next Mindful Drinking Festival takes place on 28 July in Spitalfield, London. The festival makes available a range of low or no aclohol drinks and is run by Club Soda, stating 'whether you are on a health kick, moderating your drinking habits, pregnant or trying, or just a bit sober curious, this is your chance to find a new favourite tipple.'
