Drugs, Alcohol, Women and Families Conference (DAWF)
On 23 & 24 May 2018, a Drugs, Alcohol, Women and Families Conference (DAWF) takes place at the Manchester Metropolitan University. Sponsored by The Society for the Study of Addiction (SSA), the event will focus on women, families and young people affected by substance use and with a conference theme of 'putting research into practice'. Confirmed panel themes include: pregnancy, women and agency, trauma and domestic abuse, young people, and international policy.

Social work and problem substance use: Going in the right direction?
On 26th June at Middlesex University's Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (DARC) hosts one day conference exploring the role of social work in responding to problem substance. Against the background of current changes to social work structures and approaches, the conference will help participants to take stock of our engagement as a profession so far and to think about preparing for future challenges. Radical Temperance: Social change and drink, from teetotalism to dry January
On the 28-29 June 2018 the 'Radical Temperance' conference seeks to explore the radical aspects of the avoidance of alcohol at the University of Central Lancashire, Preston, supported by the Alcohol and Drugs History Society and Alcohol Research UK. Of the many anti-drink movements across the world, one of the most influential, teetotalism, started in Preston in 1832. Alcohol management remains a key social issue; the many active support groups, dry bars, and third sector organisations in our society take varying stances on alcohol and temperance. The 5th Alcohol Policy in Practice CPD intensive training course from the UK Centre for Tobacco and Alcohol Studies takes place from 11 - 13 September 2018 in Bath. Taught by leading academics from the Universities of Sheffield, Bath, Stirling and others, as well as international experts from the Institute of Alcohol Studies and the E-HESP School of Public Health in France, the course will be run for the first time in beautiful Bath.
Previous participants have included policymakers, professionals and researchers from Canada, Iceland, Thailand, New Zealand and other European countries, as well as around the UK. Further details here or follow @ukctas.
European Alcohol Policy Conference
The 8th European Alcohol Policy Conference (8EAPC), ‘Enlightened Alcohol Policy for the 21st Century’, is to be held in Edinburgh on 20 and 21 November. SHAAP (Scottish Health Action on Alcohol Problems) and Eurocare (The European Alcohol Policy Alliance) are the organisers of the conference, which 'draws on the city’s tradition for evidence-based forward-thinking rooted in the age of Enlightenment, and is aimed at stimulating debate and policies linked to a variety of modern alcohol-linked problems'.
It is anticipating around 300 delegates, and presentations will be made by Government ministers and officials, representatives from the World Health Organization, the European Commission and leading NGOs, as well as top academics and authors. See here for further details.
Medical Council on Alcohol (MCA) 'Risky Drinking' Symposium
On 14 November 2018, the Medical Council on Alcohol is holding a symposium on 'Risky Drinking' in London. The programme will include Professor Roger Williams on the Lancet Commission on the Liver, Clive Henn from PHE on public health and the PHE’s CQUIN programme , Professor Ketan Patel on the recent elucidation of the molecular basis of alcohol in cancer causation, Dr John Holmes on risk, guideline development and implementation and Professor Colin Drummond on alcohol treatment services. The 2018 Max Glatt memorial lecture will be given by Dr Jane Marshall, consultant psychiatrist at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. The European Society for Social Drug Research conference takes place 4-6 October 2018 in Budapest, Hungary. The ESSD was founded in 1990 to promote social science approaches to drugs research, with special reference to the situation in Europe. See here for more details and call for papers.
