Alcohol Alcohol Awareness Week 2015
Alcohol Alcohol Awareness Week (AAW) 2015 takes place 16-22 November; according to Alcohol Concern, the theme is 'The Impact of Alcohol on Society', with its national conference taking place on Tuesday 17 November.
Alcohol Concern highlight AAW as an opportunity for local areas and other organisations to raise attention to the issue or as an opportunity for local or Twitter activity via #AAW2015. The charity have also been highlighting AAW as an opportunity to encourage people to sign up to Dry January.
A range of online and web based alcohol resources of course now exist for areas to promote. The Alcohol Health Network have announced a new Drink Checker web app will be free to all employers nationally for one month, which will include guidelines for managers on work parties and dealing with stress positively. Watch this space for more #AAW2015 activity.
Interestingly, 'Awareness Week on Alcohol-Related Harm' (AWARH) is also being promoted during the same week. An initiative of the European Alcohol Policy Alliance (EUROCARE), its stated aim is to 'increase awareness of the need to address alcohol-related harm in Europe, and highlight the need to address it through an integrated approach to alcohol policy'.
Stronger EU alcohol policy has been an area a number of UK organisations have been supporting after it was announced there would be no new EU alcohol strategy. Instead, a criticised EU Alcohol and Health Forum appears to have been favoured, prompting twenty-one health groups to announce they were withdrawing. Promoters of AWARH are calling for supporters to join a Thundelclap and tweet #awarh15.
The New Directions in the Study of Alcohol Group (NDSAG) have announced the 2016 conference, taking place in Thursday 21st – Sunday 24th April 2016 in Bradford. The conference will be the 40th New Directions conference, and includes a keynote from Prof. Bruce Alexander, amongst others. Scottish Health Action on Alcohol Problems (SHAAP) are hosting a series of 'occassional seminars' to showcase innovative research on alcohol use and provide the chance for researchers, practitioners and policy makers and members of the public to hear and discuss alcohol related topics.
The theme for this series is ‘Alcohol, Europe and the World’. The next seminar takes place on 8 December 2015, with a keynote from Katherine Brown of the Institute of Alcohol Studies. See here for more: 2015-16 Alcohol Occasional Seminars [doc].
