Presentations from Professor Ian Gilmore and others are available following the recent launch of the South London Alcohol Health Innovation Network (HIN) on 9th May.
Founded by NHS England, the HIN is the Academic Health Science Network (AHSN) for South London aiming to deliver service improvement and sustainable change across key health areas including alcohol.
Professor Ian Gilmore gave a presentation [pdf] on 'The burden of health harm and the evidence of how to tackle it locally and nationally', in which he stated:
- A
lcohol costs a country 2-3% of GDP through costs such as loss of productivity, which in the UK represents a loss of £37.5b
- The rising affordability of alcohol in off-licence premises
- The significant potential impact of a 50p minimum unit price rise
- The rising death rate of people under 65 caused by liver disease
Presentations also included:
- Professor Colin Drummond, Institute of Psychiatry and HIN Clinical Director (Alcohol) on the CLAHRC South London Alcohol Theme;
- Alison Keating, Head of Alcohol and Drugs Public Health England (London) on Working together to deliver our ambitions for alchol 2014-15
- Matthew Andrews, HIN Programme Manager (Alcohol), on the South London Landscape along with an overview of the Network's alcohol projects.
Attendees also contributed into the design and proposed rollout of the three project areas: alochol-related frequent attenders, Identification and Brief Advice (IBA), and a service support bank of expertise. For more information contact [email protected].
