Alcohol Awareness Week (AAW) 2013 is underway, running from 18-24 November. Alcohol Concern are encouraging local areas to promote conversations and awareness of alcohol and its impact, and emphasising the importance of Identification and Brief Advice (IBA).
Twitter is being used to highlight a range of activity by organisations across the country. Alcohol Concern tweeted #AAW13 as the suggested hashtag, although #LetsTalkDrinking, #AAW2013 and #AlcoholAwarenessWeek are also being used. Alcohol Concern have produced an outline of ideas and materials for organisations [pdf] who might wish to take part.
Locally, councils such Wirral have been promoting online identification as a quiz, and the Don't Bottle it Up alcohol intervention website have been active and launched a local 'shout it out' Twitter account and campaign. Bucks County Council have been promoting an online information and signposting hub - just a snapshot of what will be many organisations and areas taking part. Of course national resources like the NHS Choices alcohol pages or Drinkaware remain open for business.
Last year we reviewed Alcohol Awareness Week 2012 including a variety of twitter and local activity. We plan to review AAW 2013 so if you've been doing anything innovative please send us a short summary or ideally links and we'll try and cover it.
Balance launch alcohol cancer risk campaign
Balance, the North East alcohol office, have launched a hard-hitting health campaign warning that alcohol is in the same cancer causing category as tobacco smoke and asbestos. The campaign aims to raise awareness of the links between alcohol and cancer with alcohol responsible for around 12,500 cases of cancer each year in the UK. It highlights messages such as drinkers are three times more likely to develop cancers of the mouth and throat by drinking above the recommended guidelines.
