Drinkaware, the industry funded responsible drinking charity, have increased recent activity with a series of live events, campaigns and research over the festive period.
This includes the 'What's Britain drinking this christmas?' research campaign, which aims to 'investigate the nation's drinking habits to find out if we are really overdoing it during the party season'. The survey can be accessed on the home page of www.drinkaware.co.uk and a 'how to stay safe over Christmas' tips page is also available.
Drinkaware also announced findings of a survey they commissioned that found that Britons will be consuming at least 602 million units of alcohol over the festive period. It estimates the equivalent of 265 million pints, 602 million shots of vodka or 286 million glasses of mulled wine will be drunk at work Christmas parties and on Christmas day, with nearly half of consumers predicting they will be drinking more than the recommended daily unit guidelines. Further findings are reproted here.
The Morning Advertiser announced this week that Drinkaware had secured over £15m funding for the next three years to 'build campaigns aimed at young adults and under 18s, as well as increasing its digital presence and developing "more compelling" education and information programmes'.
Derek Lewis, Drinkaware chairman said: "Changing the UK drinking culture won't happen overnight and we've all got a part to play" adding that "education plays a key role in changing behaviour". However academics and health experts have criticised past investment in education approaches citing international evidence - earlier this year Professor Ian Gilmore spoke out after £100 million was announced for the industry funded campaign for smarter drinking.
Drinkaware also offers grants of up to £100,000 for projects tackling alcohol misuse, and a range of free materials.
