Best Bar None, the award scheme for licensed premises, will not be continued in Scarborough as a result of lack of interest from licensed premises. A local licensing officer stated: "We aren't organising it next year because there was only a minimum amount of people interested." As reported in the local press, one landlord suggested the amount of form-filling required may be putting premises off.
Best Bar None (BBN) has proved popular since its reported success as part of the Manchester City Safe scheme, which comprises a number of other night time economy projects. Since then BBN has been promoted as a successful way to engage and promote good practice amongst licensees. However an evaluation of Croydon's BBN in 2007 raised a number of issues including questions about evidencing its effectiveness.
Consultation will soon close on the current proposals for a mandatory code for retailers, which could have further implications for schemes such as BBN. Meanwhile, brewers SABMiller are launching a new alcohol retail training scheme to 'to offer lifetime qualifications in responsible alcohol retailing to employees at small and medium-sized licensed trade enterprises in the UK'.
