The BBC's Panorama last night documented how Oldham has responded to city centre alcohol-related crime and disorder by reviewing the licences of 22 clubs and bars. The reviews have meant that any bar selling alcohol at less than 75 pence per unit will have to have a number of strict measures in place to control alcohol consumption and disorder. The measures include a regulated queuing system, a limit on two drinks at a time and police supervision.
In Edinburgh, licensees have cut back on cheap drinks promotions in preparation for Scotland's imminent ban on irresponsible promotions, which is already reported to have led to a 20% reduction in violent crime in the city. The 30 minute programme also explores the issue of minimum pricing and whether supermarkets are contributing to the problems as a result of 'pre-loading' - revellers consuming cheap alcohol in the home before hitting the town.
