The Alcohol Learning Centre has this afternoon launched the Department of Health (DH) Identification and Brief Advice e-Learning course.
The course, commissioned by the DH and designed by e-Learning for Healthcare is free and does not require registration to use. Users can give their details on completion to print out a record of achievment certificate if they so wish.
The course is modular and takes about two hours to complete. It covers the following learning outcomes:
- information and facts about alcohol
- understanding units
- using identification tools
- structuring and conducting brief advice
- practicing brief advice
The course includes a number of interactive assessments and video.
I would be very intersted to hear people's views on this - potentially it could be a great resource to skill 'professionals' as it as targeted at, but what do professionals think?
Would commisioners feel this was sufficent training for a GP or practice nurse being contracted to deliver Screening and Brief Interventions?
My initial view is it is a good resource and would help those who are keen to learn and deliver proper interventions for alcohol, but I have heard reports that some not so good GPs are using DES payment systems but not doing anything more than the screening bit (to tick the payment box).
So there is a risk in some cases that this resource could be open to abuse through claiming having been 'adequately' trained when in reality having just flicked though the first three slides or less!
