These are exciting times for local alcohol leads argues Libby Ranzetta in the Health Service Journal this week. The Alcohol Harm Reduction Strategy for England was a huge disappointment when it was published in 2004, but it is slowly bearing fruit in the form of useful guidance from the Department of Health and, through the Choosing Health white paper, clear acknowledgement at last that action on alcohol screening and early intervention is required.
The article sets out the opportunities for developing local alcohol strategies, and improving alcohol treatment. It suggests three key steps to start reducing alcohol-related harm at local level.
