In 2004, the alcohol strategy for England promised
"a number of pilot schemes by Q1/2005 to test how best to use a variety of models of targeted screening and brief intervention in primary and secondary healthcare settings, focusing particularly on value for money and mainstreaming"
Somewhere along the line the language changed from 'pilots' to 'trailblazers' but at last the £3.2M pilot schemes/trailblazers are about to commence. The Screening and Intervention Programme for Sensible Drinking will be launched on 20th October at St George's, University of London. Details and booking form here.
The programme has three linked clinical trials designed to provide evidence on the delivery, effectiveness and cost effectiveness of a range of alcohol screening and brief intervention approaches across settings and regions in England. The trials are based around three settings: primary care, accident & emergency departments, and criminal justice. More details
